Leadership Recognition

Leadership Recognition

Students

Student input is sought and incorporated in our school planning as evidenced on the first page of this profile. Katimavik student leaders represent the student body in varied ways, serving as Masters of Ceremonies and presenters at official gatherings for example. We have a Student Council comprised of Intermediate students. Students sometimes initiate projects on their own as well. The ‘Holiday Elves’ volunteer together with parents and teachers to give back to the community. This year the Holiday Elves project has been led by our students: Student Council running a food drive, CLIK collecting for the Snowsuit Fund and the ECO-Club collecting recyclable toys. Students in our GLP run a daily milk program for the entire student body and do the recycling every week. Student accomplishments are acknowledged in newsletters, assemblies, the local newspaper, reports to school council, and awards ceremonies.

Staff

Our staff members have a wealth of professional qualifications in addition to the Bachelor of Education. Various members of the staff have the following qualifications: Master in Education, Part I to Specialist in Primary, in French as a Second Language, in Special Education, in English as a Second Language, in Music, in Physical Education, in Science, in Reading, in Mathematics and in Computers in Education. Teachers participate in ongoing Board-wide professional development sessions, and in other professional growth activities. Six teachers have taken on the leadership roles in their respective divisions, and work with the administration in leading the school and the School Improvement Plan.

Some of our teachers welcome student teachers from pre-service teacher education programs.

Parents/Guardians/Volunteers

Parent volunteers contribute many hours of valuable time to the benefit of our students. They read with our students, drive students to events, supervise field trips, help with fundraising for the band, laminate materials for teachers and much more. Several volunteer to be members of School Council, which meets monthly. We also have an increasing number of volunteers from the community.

Katimavik E. S. parents, in general, are active agents of the school community. Members of the School Council, in particular, organize events such book fairs, School Council Awareness booths at school evening events, and barbecues to encourage parental involvement and engagement. A variety of fundraising and organized activities, such as the Hot Lunch program serve to provide resources to classrooms, library, etc. We are grateful for the never-ending support of our School Council and parent community. Being the invaluable partners that they are, we look for opportunities to thank all parents on an on-going basis, in school newsletters, assemblies and at the annual volunteer appreciation breakfast.

Community

The school community makes links to the broader community through participation in the annual Terry Fox Run and collecting funds for CHEO’s Youth Mental Health Programs through bake sale fundraising. The staff and families at Katimavik have a long tradition of partnering with community agencies through the Holiday Elves project. This year, they will donate $1500 to the Kanata Food Cupboard to supplement the Food Drive led by the Student Council, and donate $500 to the Snowsuit Fund and to the Coin Drive initiated by two students to send relief money to the Philippines following the natural disaster there.

This year we are also continuing the partnership we began a year ago with the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre to provide bully awareness programming for our students.
